Hands-on environmental protection at VARTA Consumer Batteries

VARTA Consumer Batteries has always placed particular importance on protecting the environment, facing up to its responsibility to nature. The company is fully committed to sustainability in all areas.
This includes environmentally friendly development, environmentally responsible production, safe and long-life batteries as well as effective battery recycling. At VARTA Consumer, sustainability starts with the raw materials, which is why avoiding unnecessary transportation is crucial to us.
Accus maintain up to 75% of energy after 12 months of storage
For 4-person family the investment in a charger and a set of accus will pay for itself after the first year of use
It's how long it will take to charge an accu in fastest charges
It's how many cycles of charging an accu can withstand
Statistically each year each of us uses
8 batteries
Currently 90% of used batteries are disposable batteries
One accu can substitute even 300 alkaline batteries
Each year we're using 7 000 tons of batteries – if we collect them in one place they would weigh more than Cheops pyramid
Pioneers in development
At VARTA Consumer, we stopped using mercury in alkaline-manganese and zinc-carbon batteries many years ago. Our complete consumer battery range has transitioned towards mercury-free products, meaning that today these contain neither mercury nor cadmium. Our top priority is to minimise the environmental impact by using innovative and integrated environmental management processes.
These are implemented right from the planning phase and span the entire battery life cycle. We try to find environmentally friendly solutions to all issues relating to the environment and strive to engage in a sustainable exchange with our customers, suppliers, authorities and interested citizens. This is the only way to promote the development of environmentally friendly products and processes.

Responsible production
During production, we rely on progressive technology combined with processes aimed at protecting the environment. Our ongoing aim is to save resources and promote environmental sustainability. The sense of responsibility of every one of VARTA's employees therefore plays a major role. This is why we make it our priority to inform and support our employees as well as our suppliers, and to follow the same environmental guidelines.

Moreover, we require our contractors throughout the world to comply with our guidelines. Bearing in mind the legislative and regulatory requirements, we ensure that these standards are implemented effectively through our environmental management system. By regularly monitoring this system, we aim to continuously improve environmental protection on the basis of set environmental objectives.
Safe and long-lasting batteries
By constantly improving the performance of our batteries, we are minimising the number of used batteries in the future, the recycling of which is of course close to our heart. Together with other battery manufacturers and the ZVEI (the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association), we are founding members of the ‘GRS Batterien Foundation’, established in 1998, which is committed to informing citizens about battery recycling throughout Germany.
Battery disposal
Electronic devices, rechargeable and consumer batteries do not belong with the normal household waste. The materials they contain must be collected and recycled. This alone saves valuable raw materials and protects the environment in a sustainable way. In principle, it is possible to recycle all consumer batteries. Since 2008, the EU directive 2006/66/EC has become binding in all EU Member States.

It states that batteries, regardless of their electrochemical system, must be separated from household waste and have to be recycled. The required minimum standard is a collection rate of 45% by September 2016. Used batteries and rechargeable batteries can be disposed of here at VARTA Consumer, in shops as well as at municipal collection points, such as in civic amenity sites or recycling centres.
Our goal is environmental sustainability
The Brussels-based organisation EPBA aims to represent the interests of battery manufacturers, manufacturers of battery-operated devices and retailers. For this reason, the organisation summarises all industry-related information in one document. Based on this report by EPBA, VARTA Consumer developed its own sustainability report in 2011.
